About Hello Updo

Accessories rooted in hair health & designed to make good hair days last

Empowering people to nurture their truest selves

The journey of Hello Updo began in the July heat of the Dominican Republic. Struggling to find a hair tie that could hold her big, coily hair without snapping or stretching, our founder, Magdaline, realized something was missing — the world lacked hair accessories designed for textured and fuller hair types.

Back home, with determination and a sewing machine in her Abuela’s kitchen, she created the first Flora silk scrunchie in Biggish — now Hello Updo’s hero product and the foundation of our mission. Through our innovative hair accessories, we empower people to nurture their truest selves.

“For Magdaline, hair has always been more than just hair”

As a Dominican-American, she grew up hearing the phrase “pelo malo” and endured years of treatments that aimed to change her natural texture. Embracing her curls became a journey of self-acceptance — one that taught her the beauty of patience, love, and identity.

Today, Hello Updo stands as a celebration of hair in all its forms — offering high-quality accessories that honor diverse beauty, support hair health, and remind us that every strand is good hair.

For far too long, we’ve been told otherwise—but your hair has always been beautiful and deserving. PELO BUENO is our love letter to hair in all its forms—a celebration of every texture, curl, wave, and strand.

Created with love, this short film challenges the harmful “Pelo Malo” narrative that persists in the Dominican Republic and beyond. We believe in reclaiming the truth: all hair is good hair.

As part of this initiative, Hello Updo proudly donated 15% of profits during 2024 Hispanic Heritage Month to Hogar Madelaes, an orphanage for girls in the Dominican Republic that provides safe housing, education, health services, and emotional support to help young girls find their voices and embrace their beauty.

At Hello Updo, we create silk hair accessories designed to love, protect, and hydrate your Pelo Bueno—because good (hair) days should be for everyone.
