A NEW WAY TO UPDO

We knew it was possible to make more inclusive and effective versions of our go to accessories, but they were either impossible to find or didn't exist at all. So we decided to create them ourselves.

Fueled by a commitment to inclusivity and wellness, we are setting the tone for what hair care tools should look like.

WHY WE STARTED

The journey of Hello Updo began in a moment of frustration under the July heat of the Dominican Republic. Struggling to find a hair tie that could accommodate my big, coily hair without snapping or stretching to its limits, I realized the global market lacked tools designed for textured, fuller hair types. Back home, with determination and a sewing machine in my Abuela's kitchen, I crafted the first Flora silk scrunchie in Biggish—a product that has since become the hero of Hello Updo, empowering women with hair tools that prioritize health and inclusivity.

My personal relationship with hair, however, runs deeper. As a Dominican-American, I grew up hearing the phrase "pelo malo" and endured years of damage from salon treatments that sought to change my natural hair. Embracing my curls was a hard-won journey of patience, self-love, and rediscovery of identity. Hello Updo stands as a celebration of textured hair, offering high-quality tools that honor diverse beauty while supporting healthier, happier hair.

PELO BUENO: A Love Letter to Our GOOD HAIR

For far too long, we’ve been told otherwise—but your hair has always been beautiful and deserving. PELO BUENO is our love letter to hair in all its forms—a celebration of every texture, curl, wave, and strand.

Created with love, this short film challenges the harmful “Pelo Malo” narrative that persists in the Dominican Republic and beyond. We believe in reclaiming the truth: all hair is good hair.

As part of this initiative, Hello Updo proudly donated 15% of profits during 2024 Hispanic Heritage Month to Hogar Madelaes, an orphanage for girls in the Dominican Republic. This incredible organization provides safe housing, education, health services, and emotional support to help young girls find their voices and embrace their beauty.

At Hello Updo, we create silk hair accessories designed to love, protect, and hydrate your Pelo Bueno—because good (hair) days should be for everyone.
